Boston Beer Company’s Samuel Adams brand helped to redefine beer and kick off the craft beer revolution in the United States. Sam Adams helped educate beer drinkers, so that they might choose a malt beverage with full flavor, rich taste and attention to detail.
Jim Koch founded Samuel Adams in 1984. Jim was a man with a passion for beer. It was said that Jim Koch had beer in his blood. Koch balanced his passion for making beer with a passion for talking it up to anyone who would listen. He believed that a great beer needs to come from the heart of somebody who really loves it, and you can’t fake that. During the early days, Koch drove a forklift and served as the first brewmaster while spending full days selling his beer bar to bar in Boston.
From the very beginning, Jim Koch wanted to create a company that he would want to work for. He created a culture that celebrated beer. Koch’s team combined a passion and depth of knowledge that was contagious to others. That is leading with purpose and turning it into great results. People at Samuel Adams all share a love of great beer. They’ve worked hard at maintaining that culture. The Boston Beer Company has been cited as one of the best companies to work for by Boston Magazine, one of the Best Entry-Level Jobs by The Princeton Review, and their beers have won more awards than any other in history. The Samuel Adams Brand has stayed focused on delivering quality, creativity and innovation.
I discovered Samuel Adams Boston Lager in the early 1990’s. It was the first craft beer that I drank. I have it enjoyed ever since and it helped changed the way I thought about beer.
Today Samuel Adams faces significant competition from the global beer giants like Budweiser on one side and the small craft breweries on the other. To differentiate themselves in the crowded market Sam Adams has increased the number of products that it offers. In 2011, they offered over 50 distinct styles of beer and they introduced 23 new products. Seasonal products like Winter Lager have always been a strength of Sam Adams. I recently tasted their Latitude 48 IPA which was excellent.
For Sam Adams is has always been about the love of beer. Their current tagline says it well Sam Adams – For the Love of Beer
